The 9-5 is long overdue for an overhaul, with the basic mechanical underpinnings in the current model first hitting streets as far back as 1997. A totally redesigned model was expected to make an appearance last year but its release was pushed back due to limited resources at and the introduction of the facelifted 9-3, not to mention the company’s then-ongoing ownership limbo.

Inside, the cabin boasts traditional Saab design cues such as a “7″ dashboard, complex air vents, and a center console-mounted ignition. Other styling touches include glossy black trim, aggressively bolstered seats, and a thick-rimmed steering wheel. On the options list, we can expect a rear seat entertainment , bi-xenon headlights, a Harman Kardon audio , keyless entry, and a large 8-inch navigation from Panasonic.

Underneath the sheetmetal, the new 9-5 uses the same Epsilon II chassis as the Opel Insignia. Saab of course has not released any details, but it’s no secret that the engine range will be common between the two models. This means that the 9-5 will be offered with 2.0-liter turbocharged four pots and 2.8-liter turbocharged V6 gasoline units as well as with an updated line-up of 4-cylinder direct-injection diesels.

The all- powertrain line-up starts at 1.6 liters and carries forward Saab’s rightsizing engine strategy, which focuses on responsible performance through the development of highly efficient and relatively small four cylinder engines. There is a choice of three fuels – gasoline, diesel and E85 bioethanol – and with diesel power, the new 9-5 offers CO2 emissions as low as 139 g/km.
